A Look Back: AI Training at the WTO and Its Global Impact

In 2024, a pioneering collaboration between the University of Greater Manchester (formerly the University of Bolton) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) marked a defining moment in the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into global trade ecosystems.

At the heart of this initiative was a groundbreaking 14-session Modular Programme on AI and Supply Chains, delivered in Geneva in collaboration with WTO officials, trade experts, and academics. The programme was part of a broader vision to demystify AI, promote inclusive digital transformation, and upskill international trade regulators and policymakers.

This training was designed and led by the University’s Centre for Intelligence of Things (CIoTh), under my direction, with contributions from a dynamic team of faculty and professionals. The course addressed key topics such as AI ethics, predictive analytics, digital trade facilitation, and supply chain optimisation. It empowered WTO participants with practical insights and tools to responsibly deploy AI in a way that supports transparency, sustainability, and equity in international commerce.

The ripple effects were immediate and profound. Several WTO departments began exploring new AI-based systems for trade monitoring and forecasting, while academic-industry collaborations gained traction through research, policy briefs, and exchange programmes. Our commitment to inclusive innovation was especially impactful, fostering opportunities for professionals from developing nations to contribute to shaping the future of AI in global trade.

This initiative also led to the expansion of CIoTh’s global partnerships and the recognition of the University of Greater Manchester as a thought leader in the AI-for-trade space.

As we look back, this collaboration reflects what is possible when knowledge, innovation, and diplomacy intersect. It is a legacy of bold thinking and shared progress, and we are proud to have led the charge.

The journey continues.
